3/16/2024 0 Comments Desert bloom family medicine jobWe saw rain swollen, brown creeks and clear running streams with tall waterfalls. The views of the river and surroundings were breathtaking from the heights that were climbed. Spring was a time of desert flower blooms and healthy blooming cactus and no sign of rattlesnakes. The hikes, though strenuous, were enjoyable and worth every minute of the uphill struggle. We all looked forward to the evening stories told by Riley and the morning readings by her and Shelby. They were happy to be there on that awe-inspiring river helping the rafters to their “once in a lifetime” experience doing what they do all summer long. The entire crew worked so hard to keep rafters happy but you’d never know it to hear them talk or the looks on their faces. Shelby was amazing also, seeming to know what to do at all times without having to be asked by Cora or Riley. He had the most infectious laugh that made everyone comfortable and always brought a smile to their faces. Evan seemed to know everything already and was a capable boatman, cook, mechanic. They were boatmen, guides, cooks, mechanics and entertainment. Hot, full breakfasts in the morning and hot gourmet dinners in the evening, with lunches made up fresh during brief lunch stops on the river.īoatmen, Cora and Riley both did masterful jobs negotiating the rivers challenges and bringing along the river education of Evan and Shelby. The history of the early Grand Canyon explorers was fascinating and exciting. Native culture was revered by all the crew and explained to everyone so that it made sense and was appreciated by all of us. Riley and Cora’s narrative of the history, both geologic and anthropologic was amazing. The river warms you up for the really big ones with a little ones to start with. The first day we were on the river we got rapids and got wet. We were all entertained and educated at the same time in preparing to board our rafts. Riley’s exuberance and enthusiasm for her role as trip leader was evident in her informative and animated talk on what her and the crew’s role was and what our role was in making it an exciting but safe trip. The orientation we were met with at Lee’s Ferry was very informative but also emphasized that we were our own keepers and it was an adventure trip not a cruise. Once we arrived at the hotel we were treated like VIPs and were picked up in a very comfortable coach for the ride to Lee’s Ferry to begin our trip. They tried to impart what rafters had to expect along the journey. They emphasized what to bring and how to pack for a trip which most rafters had never been on similar trip before. They asked questions about health concerns and what you and they could do to alleviate those concerns. The staff sent timely email instructions for preparation along with links to very helpful and informative blogs from previous rafters. From the very beginning of interacting with office staff on arrangements and instructions to final haul out and drive back to Flagstaff, it was unparalleled. The Colorado River rafting trip (11 day hiker's Special) with Grand Canyon Whitewater was an unforgettable experience. We would do this trip again in a heartbeat with Grand Canyon Whitewater. We planned to sleep in a tent but instead decided to sleep under the stars on our cots, drifting to sleep while gazing at the Big Dipper, the Milky Way, and strings of satellites. The camping equipment provided is high quality and clean. So, in addition to ensuring your safe passage on the river they also prepare three restaurant-quality meals every day. The crew works extremely hard from before sunrise to after dark. Accordingly, they plan days ahead so that you enjoy the best stops, and the best campsites in relative solitude. We hardly saw another soul during our eight-day trip because Matt and Rachel are aware of which other parties are on the river and when and where they are likely to moor/stop. They know every bend in the river, every eddy, every rapid, as well as every significant historical event that occurred over the 230 miles we traveled. This trip with Grand Canyon Whitewater was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!īetween them, our river guides Matt and Rachel had completed close to 200 rafting trips through the Grand Canyon.

Half-inch marks will be longer than quarter-inch marks, which will be longer than 1/8th-inch marks, which will be longer than 1/16th-inch marks. One simple way to differentiate between them is by looking at the length of the markings. However, it can also lead to some confusion, especially when trying to distinguish 1/8th from 1/16th-inch marks. The more markings there are on a ruler, the more accurate your measurement will be. Between quarter-inch marks are even shorter 1/8th-inch marks, and between them are even shorter 1/16th-inch marks. In between that and the nearest inches are the slightly shorter quarter-inch marks. If you pay close attention to the markings between inches, you’ll notice a line down the middle, which denotes the half-inch mark. So, between two-inch points, there will be 7 or 15 marks, which represent 1/8th or 1/16th of an inch, respectively. Most rulers can measure inches to 1/8th or 1/16th. However, the confusion of reading a ruler comes from figuring out what the tiny marks between inches and centimeters mean. All you have to do is align the end of the object with the 0-inch or 0-centimeter mark on the ruler. Reading the length of an object with a ruler is pretty straightforward. However, the problem with measuring wheels is that obstacles, such as tiny rocks, will affect the final reading. The device calculates how many times the wheel rotates before multiplying the figure by the wheel’s circumference, giving you a decently accurate distance reading. Measuring WheelĪ measuring wheel is a measuring tool that is generally used to measure the boundaries of a plot of land. You can convert readings from imperial to metric and back with a press of a button. The Bosch GLM50C has a maximum measurement of 165 feet, while a heavier-duty leaser distance meter like the Leica Disto D2 can reach up to 330 feet! Most laser distances can measure long distances accurately at 1/16th of an inch. It does so by measuring how long it takes for the laser to reflect from an object and return to the device. Laser Distance MeterĪ laser distance meter, which also goes by the name “laser tape,” delivers laser pulses to gauge the distance of a faraway object. In addition, they come with tiny markings that indicate how many fractions of an inch or centimeter. You would typically use a tape measure to measure large objects, such as the height of a room, the length of your kitchen counter, etc. Like rulers, they can come with both imperial and metric units. A tape measure generally measures 12 feet long, but larger tape measures have 30-foot-long ribbons. Tape MeasureĪ tape measure is a flexible ruler that uses a retracting ribbon that, with a push of a button, sends it rolling back into a plastic or metal housing. Because of this, you can easily figure out how many fractions of an inch or centimeter something is simply by looking at the tiny markings. RulerĪs previously indicated, a ruler is used to measure short distances of up to 12 inches or 30 centimeters. In addition, the greater the distance a tool can measure, the more difficult it can be to measure fractions of an inch or centimeter.īelow, I’ll provide a quick description of the most commonly used tools for measuring distances. While they are used for the same purpose, they can have vastly different maximum measurement capacities and margins of error. There are several tools you can use to measure distances-e.g., tape measure, laser distance meter, and measuring wheel. How Do Rulers Differ from Other Measuring Tools? Because a foot is equal to 30.48 centimeters, the metric side of a ruler will end before the imperial side by a tiny margin equal to 0.48 centimeters. The length of a ruler will vary, but most rulers measure 1 foot long or 30 centimeters long. That way, you can easily convert the length of an object from imperial to metric, and vice versa, by flipping the ruler over. Most rulers come with imperial (inches and feet) and metric (millimeters and centimeters) units. How Big Is a Ruler?Ī ruler is a tool that you use to measure short distances. In today’s guide, I’ll go into greater detail about the lengths of rulers, as well as talk about the differences between rulers and other measuring tools and how to read inches and centimeters on a ruler. There are also yardsticks and meters ticks which measure 3 feet and 100 centimeters, respectively. Most rulers measure 12 inches or 30 centimeters long, not including the slight margins on both ends of the ruler. It is typically made of plastic, wood, or metal, and it has markings on two ends that denote imperial and metric measurements. One of the best, simplest tools for measuring short distances is the ruler.
